Algebra Fun!

Hello class,

As promised I have posted the link to the fun equation game we played earlier this week.
Be sure to check out the new links below, as well as our math game section off to the right hand side of this page. Remember to check back frequently for updates!

Lucky handArrange the cards and arithmetic signs into a formula that represents 24

Here is a chance to practice your addition and subtraction, by dressing up or skateboarding around town.

Dress up: Take your character shopping! Remember to stay within the budget in order to proceed to the next level.

Harnessing The Suns Energy

Hello class,

Today we focused on plants (producers) and how they harness energy from the sun to make their own food. This process called photosynthesis seemed to leave a few of us unclear. I have found a video I know you will all enjoy, that will help explain this process with accuracy and detail.  Enjoy

Now that you have seen this video think back to the seeds we planted today in our classroom. How do you think the seeds exposed to direct sunlight will grow vs. those kept in the dark? Have your initial predictions changed now that you have seen this video?

What is Your Role in The Food Chain?

Hello parents and students,

Today we learned how to classify organisms according to their role in the food chain. Organisms were classified into three groups, producers, consumers, or decomposers. We learned that all producers make their own food. They rely on energy from the sun to help them grow. Consumers are organisms that cannot make their own food like plants do, so they eat other organisms instead. Decomposers convert dead matter into gasses that are released back into the air, soil, and water. All organisms rely on one another in order to survive. Together they sustain life on earth.

How much to do know about producers, consumers, and decomposers? Test your knowledge and see how you do on this next organism challenge.

Was that a piece of cake? Try this next food chain challenge; it will have you hooked the moment you look.

Understanding Life Systems

Welcome back!

This week we will be beginning our unit on habitats and communities. Habitats are natural homes where animals, plants, and other organisms live.

This is a photo of Brazil’s rainforest

Brazil’s rainforest is home to thousands of animals. The Amazon Rainforest covers over a billion acres surrounding Brazil, Venezuela, and Colombia. It has been called the lungs of our planet because it recycles a majority of the world’s carbon dioxide into oxygen. The rainforest provides humans and animals with many fruits such as avocados, coconuts, figs, oranges, lemons, grapefruit, bananas, guavas, pineapples, mangos and tomatoes.

Watch this video to learn more about animal habitats!

For more information follow this link to the Habitat Challenge! Test your knowledge of habitats through these fun interactive games!

Poetry

Hello everyone!

Thank you for sending in your wonderful stanzas. We will be using them in this week’s language block, as we will be learning about a variety of poetic forms (acrostic, haiku, and limerick). Check out these cool links to familiarize yourselves with these three styles, and enjoy some of the poems written by other children like you!

Spring

March 20th, 2012 Is the first day of ...

Spring is near,
Oh what a wonderful time of year!
The flowers will bloom,
Releasing a scent of perfume!

Following the AA BB rhyming pattern, help me welcome in the spring by composing the next stanza to this poem.

Welcome Everyone!

Welcome Parents/Guardians and Students to Ms. Valerio’s online learning centre. This space will be used for educational purposes, and is a fun and interactive way for students to link class concepts to the world outside the classroom. Students are encouraged to visit and further explore class concepts, by investigating the student links section of this page. Blogs will be used for the purpose of reminding students of important dates and events, within the school and around the community; as well as being an interactive way for students to share their thoughts, and complete fun teacher assigned quests.

Until next time, and happy blogging!
